For public spaces, the question is not just what gets lit. The question is what the lighting helps the place become.

Civic placemaking

Light can change how a town moves.

A strong civic holiday program does more than decorate the season. It helps people find their way, gather safely, stay longer, photograph the place, attend events, support local businesses, and experience the town as something special.

Bring people downtown Create a visible seasonal draw for residents, visitors, families, and event programming.
Activate underused areas Use light to make trails, corridors, plazas, and access points feel more inviting.
Support local business Encourage foot traffic, lingering, repeat visits, and a stronger downtown atmosphere.
Create civic memory Build the photo moments, traditions, and shared experiences people associate with the town.

What we design

Seasonal environments for public life.

Every city and town has different assets: a main street, a central plaza, a trail, a civic building, a tree canopy, a shuttle stop, a public park, or a gathering space waiting to become more visible.

01

Downtown Districts

Main streets, storefront corridors, medians, intersections, alleys, and arrival points that need a cohesive seasonal identity.

02

Public Plazas

Town squares, civic centers, gathering areas, signature trees, event zones, and the places people naturally come together.

03

Parks and Trails

Pedestrian routes, riverwalks, trailheads, shuttle connections, winter walking paths, and underused public spaces.

04

Community Photo Moments

Large ornaments, walkthrough features, trees, arches, gateways, and memorable focal points for families and visitors.

05

Programmed Light Shows

Smart lights, music-responsive effects, themed shows, color sequencing, and public installations that evolve through the season.

06

Year-Over-Year Programs

Seasonal plans that can be installed, maintained, stored, improved, expanded, and refreshed over multiple years.

Flagship civic work

Town of Breckenridge

A town-scale holiday lighting program that turns downtown Breckenridge into a signature winter environment. The work connects public plazas, tree canopies, pedestrian corridors, gathering areas, and the visitor experience into a cohesive seasonal place.

Client type Town, downtown district, public spaces
Scale 18+ miles of holiday lights
Design focus Plazas, trees, corridors, visibility, and public gathering
Outcome A winter environment people photograph, share, and remember

People choose memorable public places for the moments they want to keep.

Designing for civic memory
Large-scale holiday lighting in a snowy downtown public plaza
Town-scale holiday lighting is about more than adding brightness. It is about creating a coherent seasonal experience across the public realm.

Pedestrian activation

Riverwalk Trail of Lights

The Breckenridge Riverwalk Trail of Lights was designed to increase pedestrian access, activate underutilized downtown walking areas, create pleasurable access points, and relieve pressure from other parts of town. This is holiday lighting as civic infrastructure.

Goal Increase pedestrian access and activate underused areas
Activated area Approximately 1 mile of walking areas
Design scope 167 trees and 31,750 feet of lights
Public logic Access points, shuttle stops, trail visibility, and downtown flow
Holiday lights in a public pedestrian environment
The strongest civic projects solve for movement, access, visibility, atmosphere, and how people use the town after dark.

Public programming

Grasso Park Lights

In Superior, Colorado, Elevation turned Grasso Park into a themed light show experience from December through March. The project used smart programmable lights, themed color palettes, music visualization, spatial effects, and season-long public programming.

Location Superior, Colorado
Scale 10 trees and 15,000+ smart programmable lights
Programming Themed shows, music visualization, and color sequencing
Seasonal value A changing public experience from December through March

Programmed light experiences allow a public space to change mood, theme, and use across the season.

Designed for municipal realities

Beautiful public spaces still need serious planning.

Cities and towns need more than creative ideas. They need a partner who understands power, access, timing, safety, weather, public events, maintenance, and the reality of working in active civic environments.

Power

Electrical audits, outlet testing, load planning, mapping, and early identification of repairs needed before installation.

Access

Lift access, streets, sidewalks, trails, plazas, staging areas, public safety, and installation zones.

Coordination

Planning around public events, business activity, street closures when needed, and minimal disruption to the community.

Service

Weekly preventative visits, rapid response, and a commitment to keeping displays strong throughout the full season.

Renewal

Takedown, storage, documentation, year-over-year improvements, expansion planning, and budget phasing.

A civic design-build process

From site strategy to season-long service.

Our process is built for public environments where the design needs to inspire people and the execution needs to hold up under weather, crowds, schedules, and public visibility.

Site Strategy

We study the town, visitor flow, civic priorities, existing assets, focal points, pedestrian routes, and public gathering areas.

Concept Design

We create a seasonal experience that fits the place, the audience, the budget, and the civic goals of the program.

Electrical Audit

We test outlets early, flag repair needs, map power, and identify technical constraints before the installation window.

Installation Planning

We plan lifts, timing, crews, access, pedestrian impact, weather, events, street closures, and installation sequence.

Season Maintenance

Weekly preventative visits and rapid response keep the public-facing environment clean, bright, and reliable.

Takedown and Storage

We remove, organize, store, document, and prepare the program for renewal, improvement, or expansion next season.

Where we fit

For towns that want the season to become a signature experience.

The best civic holiday programs are not one-off decorations. They become a part of how residents and visitors experience the town. Elevation helps municipalities think about the whole environment: arrival, gathering, visibility, pedestrian routes, photo moments, service, and long-term improvement.
